Roberto Martinez: 'John Stones has shown maturity'

Everton boss Roberto Martinez says that John Stones has remained professional following the collapse of his proposed move to Chelsea.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that John Stones has handled himself well after his proposed move to Chelsea fell through.

The 21-year-old defender had a transfer request rejected at Goodison Park after the Blues saw two bids turned down during the summer transfer window.

"We take it as a compliment when clubs are interested in our young players," he told BBC Sport.

"But I thought that once the window was closed, we could concentrate on the games. Any backlash from it, I'm not going to entertain.

"John has gone from strength to strength in a period of high pressure. He's been taking the support of everyone at the club and performed with incredible composure and maturity, which is a sign of the calibre of player he is."

Stones could play when Everton host Chelsea in the Premier League this Saturday.
