Bury chairman Stewart Day has admitted that it was a tough decision to sack manager Kevin Blackwell.
The 54-year-old was dismissed by the League Two club on Monday after a poor start to the season.
Day told the club's official website: "When I started the role at Bury, I knew that there would be decisions to be made that would not always be easy.
"It saddened me to make this decision but was made with the best intention of the club's future."
Bury continue their league campaign on Saturday when they travel to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth.
