Chris Hughton is pleased with Brighton & Hove Albion's 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, describing it as "a step in the right direction".

Chris Hughton has described Brighton & Hove Albion's 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur as "a step in the right direction".

Spurs took the lead after 48 minutes of Tuesday night's Premier League game at the Amex Stadium through Harry Kane, who made the most of a Gaetan Bong error.

However, the Seagulls levelled two minutes later when Pascal Gross rattled home from the penalty spot after Serge Aurier had brought down Jose Izquierdo.

Brighton hung on against their opponents, the result putting them eight points above the relegation zone with four games left of the campaign.

"It's a step in the right direction, and what I was most delighted with was the character of the team to concede the way we did and then react the way we did," Hughton told Sky Sports News.

"We showed great quality in the areas when we needed to. Against these big sides you have got to give everything and if you are below your best they can really hurt you.

"They have such quality, speed and appreciation of space that you have to be disciplined around that, and maybe in the first half we gave it away too easily.

"The supporters have been excellent all season. Our performances here have been good and we have needed them. With any support, if they see reaction from the players they will get behind them."

Brighton do not play again until April 28, when they travel to Turf Moor for a league meeting with Burnley.
