Burnley ended their 35-year wait for a win over East Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers this afternoon, thanks to a quickfire second-half comeback at Ewood Park.

After Jordan Rhodes had given the home side a half-time lead, Clarets skipper Jason Shackell equalised before top scorer Danny Ings scored his 25th goal of the season to seal a memorable victory.

Burnley are now eight points clear of third-placed Derby County in second, with automatic promotion to the Premier League looking more and more likely.

Was the result fair?

It's hard to say that Burnley didn't deserve the three points, but Blackburn will certainly feel that they should have got at least a point out of it. It was one of those games where it really could have gone either way and Burnley's quality just about shone through.

Blackburn's performance

Gary Bowyer's men started the match superbly, pressing Burnley into a number of mistakes and one of those led to the opening goal. It was a great finish from Rhodes after the longest goal drought of his career at eight games. From then on, both sides had plenty of chances and Rhodes will be furious with himself for not making it 2-0 when he capitalised on David Jones's sloppy back-pass but could only hit the post. Bowyer will view both Burnley goals as avoidable and feel that his side should have closed out the win today.

Burnley's performance

Another week, another win for Sean Dyche's brilliant Burnley. They have been the surprise package this season and again today didn't slump into submission after the excellent start by Blackburn. In what was a fairly even game, someone with Ings's quality was going to be the one to settle it and his predatory instinct was rewarded when he side-footed home the winner to spark jubilant scenes among the 4,000 or so travelling Clarets. Perhaps not Burnley's best performance, but they ended a run of 11 games without a win against their rivals and, most importantly, now look almost nailed on for promotion to the top flight.

Danny Ings: There wasn't one standout player, but Ings's work rate all afternoon was rewarded with the winning goal.

Biggest gaffe

Rhodes may have ended his goalless run with a neat finish, but he should have put Rovers two up when he collected Jones's errant back-pass and rolled a low shot against the post.

Referee performance

Premier League regular Mike Dean officiated with his usual authority but did get one major decision wrong. Ings got to a ball in the area before Rovers captain Grant Hanley and was clearly fouled by the Scot. Burnley should have had a penalty and the Scot should have been sent off. Dyche will be pleased that it didn't cost Burnley.

What next?

Blackburn: Blackburn will need to beat Bournemouth on Wednesday night if they are to keep alive their hopes of making a late dash for the playoffs.

Burnley: The Clarets are also in action on Wednesday night, travelling down to St Andrew's to face Birmingham City.
