Preview: Bergerac Perigord vs. Saint-Etienne - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Coupe de France clash between Bergerac Perigord and Saint-Etienne, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

The third round's giant-killing heroes must attempt to beat top-flight opposition again in the Coupe de France on Sunday evening.

Fourth-tier Bergerac Perigord will aim to conduct a thorough investigation of Saint-Etienne's defence - a defence which has crumbled under pressure numerous times this season.

The hosts shocked Ligue 1's Metz back in December as they held Les Grenats to a goalless draw and then beat them 5-4 on penalties to eliminate a top-tier side from the competition for the first time in their history and progress to the fourth round in the process.

Despite facing a club far closer to their own level in the following round - third-tier Creteil - the match went exactly the same way, 0-0 in regular time and eventually a 5-4 win on penalties.

The South-western club - from a region famous for its wine and namesake detective - also reached the round of 16 back in 2017 but were knocked out after a 2-1 loss to Lille.

They will aim to make amends this time around and come into the match on a 15-game unbeaten run stretching back to early September, which sees them sitting top of the National 2 table.

Their opponents, on the other hand, are at the opposite end of the Ligue 1 table. Saint-Etienne have endured another miserable campaign, and currently sit five points from safety in 20th position.

Things looked even worse before their first league victory since November on Wednesday - an important 1-0 win away at Angers, which came courtesy of a Batista Mendy own goal just before half time.

It was certainly not the prettiest victory in their long club history but perhaps won of the more important ones, ending a seven-game losing streak which had continued through a change of manager.

The new man in charge - Pascal Dupraz - has, at least, picked up a couple of wins in the cup against lower-league opposition in Jura Sud Foot and Lyon La Duchere.

His side will now face another lower-league team, but one that has shown it is perfectly capable of claiming a Ligue 1 scalp already in this competition.

Team News

Bergerac manager Erwan Lannuzel will likely stick with his favoured 4-2-3-1. Ali Samir Mohammed Bakir will be first choice to lead the line, likely supported in attack by Axel Tressens, Victor Elissalt and Hicham M'Laab.

The visitors will be missing Cameroon's Harold Moukoudi and Yvan Neyou, as well as Tunisian striker Wahbi Khazri, who are all continuing their Africa Cup of Nations adventure.

After Guinea and Gabon's respective eliminations from the tournament, however, Saidou Sow and Denis Bouanga are back and available for selection, potentially coming straight into the starting XI, with the latter having already featured from the bench on Wednesday.

Romain Hamouma remains out with an injury but new signings Eliaquim Mangala and Joris Gnagnon have now been successfully registered and should be available.

Bergerac Perigord possible starting lineup:
Laborde-Turon; Ducros, Mingoua, Colombo, Letievant; Maisonneuve, Fachan; M'Laab, Elissalt, Tressens; Mohammed Bakir

Saint-Etienne possible starting lineup:
Bernadoni; Macon, Nade, Kolodziejczak, Thioub; Camara, Gourna-Douath; Nordin, Aouchiche, Bouanga; Krasso

We say: Bergerac Perigord 0-1 Saint-Etienne

Without their midweek victory, this prediction would likely have gone the way of the hosts, considering their incredible unbeaten run. However, with the boost of finally rediscovering winning ways, we are backing the Ligue 1 side to narrowly scrape through this encounter.
