Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara will play no part in Spain's World Cup campaign in Brazil due to a knee injury.
The Bundesliga club have confirmed that the 23-year-old will undergo surgery after suffering a recurrence of a ligament tear in his right knee last Monday.
The Spaniard, who initially picked up the injury in March, has been ruled out of the defending champions' World Cup campaign, as well as Saturday's German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "It's bitter for Thiago. We're sorry for the guy. A young lad who's been working on his comeback and on the World Cup in the land of his father, and suddenly both dreams are shot."
Thiago was originally named in Vicente del Bosque's provisional 30-man squad on Tuesday.
