Aston Villa will try to avoid paying compensation to Norwich City for Paul Lambert.

Aston Villa have attempted to exploit a loophole in Paul Lambert's contract in order to escape paying compensation to Norwich City.

The Scot resigned from his position at Carrow Road after Canaries chiefs refused Villa permission to speak to him.

It has been reported that a clause in the 42-year-old's contract deal allows him to speak to any Premier League club who makes an approach.

As Lambert was forced to resign, Villa have claimed that Norwich City broke the terms of the contract and therefore no compensation should be forthcoming.

The Midlands club are expected to formally unveil Lambert as their manager today.
