Paul Lambert has said that Fabian Delph has a "big career" ahead of him whether he stays with Aston Villa or moves elsewhere.
The England international has been linked with a move away from the club during the current transfer window, with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both said to be interested.
The manager told reporters: "The contract might happen if your club is flying and doing well. We're still talking to Fabian and hopefully we can get something done. It would be great for us if we could do it.
"When you're edging towards the end of your contract you have the obligation to see it through and then move. One thing is for sure if he keeps progressing and doing what he's doing he's in for a big career."
Delph will be available to face Liverpool tomorrow after serving a three-match suspension for this week.
