Southampton's Victor Wanyama tries to "put straight" his comments about Arsenal

Southampton's Victor Wanyama attempts to "put straight" his earlier tweets claiming that quotes attributed to him about Arsenal wanting him were false.

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama has attempted to clarify his Twitter outburst this morning when he rubbished reports linking him to Arsenal.

The 23-year-old was quoted by a national newspaper as saying that Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is keen to sign him this summer.

In response to the story, Wanyama tweeted that he would "never" say what was quoted and that he has not spoken to Wenger about a possible transfer.

The Kenyan has since deleted the tweets and replaced them with messages that read: "Sorry - was caught off guard this morning about a story that I hadn't read. To put it straight: We all respect Arsenal but right now I'm only focussed on helping Saints to have a strong finish to the season.

"The newspaper article does not say that I have spoken to Wenger or anyone else from Arsenal - and that's the truth. We are doing so well and what other managers think of me as a player is totally out of my control."

Wanyama has been a Southampton player since 2013 following his move from Celtic.
