Sporting director Max Eberl has acknowledged that Denis Zakaria is likely to leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer.
The 24-year-old has impressed in the Bundesliga since 2017, making a total of 109 appearances and helping his club earn qualification for the Champions League.
However, the performances of the Switzerland international have naturally led to interest from elsewhere, including from Arsenal and Manchester City.
While Monchengladbach have been attempting to extend the player's contract past 2022, Eberl has admitted that an exit looks more likely.
Speaking to reporters, Eberl said: "With Denis, we have been trying to extend his contract since October. Denis and his management told us pretty clearly that they would prefer a transfer this summer."
Liverpool, who require a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, have also been linked with a move for Zakaria in the past.
