Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen calls on the team's fans to support them after a disappointing week for the club.

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen believes that the players need the support of the club's supporters if they are to turn their fortunes around this season.

The Gunners were booed off after they lost to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend, and they did little to lighten the mood at the Emirates Stadium after they lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

However, despite a disappointing week, Vermaelen has called for the fans' support when Arsenal face Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Belgian international told the club's official website: "We need the fans because they belong to the club.

"We have to stand behind each other. That's the only thing we can do.

"Of course I can see why they are frustrated. Sometimes you're frustrated as a player as well. If you lose, you get frustrated. You have to stick together, and work hard. We need each other."

Arsenal are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table.
