Greg van Avermaet takes Tirreno-Adriatico lead

Greg van Avermaet sprints to victory in stage three of the Tirreno-Adriatico to take an overall lead.

BMC Racing rider Greg van Avermaet has taken the overall lead in the Tirreno-Adriatico.

The 29-year-old claimed victory on stage three of the event by holding off Peter Sagan and Zdenek Stybar in a sprint finish.

He had finished second in the previous stage in Siena and started the day in fourth, but the 10 bonus seconds he claimed for winning today have lifted him to the top of the leaderboard.

The Tirreno–Adriatico was won last year by Spain's Alberto Contador.
