New Zealand have set India a victory target of 293 runs in the first one-day international in Napier.
The Kiwis lost their first two wickets with just 32 runs on the board, but the partnership between Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor proved to be crucial for the hosts.
Williamson was eventually dismissed for 71 runs in the 33rd over with New Zealand on 153 and Taylor followed soon after for 55, but subsequent good knocks from Brendon McCullum (30), Corey Anderson (68) and Luke Ronchi (38) helped Mike Hesson's side post a formidable total of 292-7.
Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking four wickets for 55 runs.
