Batting first, the Black Caps used their 50 overs to post a total of 285-6, with all of their top four scoring 47 or more in what was the first ever ODI to take place in Nelson.
Martin Guptill (81), Jesse Ryder (47), Kane Williamson (47) and Ross Taylor (49) steadily built a solid platform, which allowed Brendon McCullum (14), Luke Ronchi (9), Corey Anderson (17*) and Nathan McCullum (9*) to add quicker runs at the end of the innings.
The Windies lost both openers for ducks in reply and were 134-5 when rain ended the game after 33.4 overs, leaving New Zealand's margin of victory to be calculated using the Duckworth–Lewis method.
