Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry admits that he is flattered to be touted as a possible replacement for Andrew Strauss in the England team.

Michael Carberry has admitted that he is desperate to make a return to Test cricket with England after the retirement of Andrew Strauss.

The Hampshire batsman is reportedly one of the candidates to take Strauss's place as Alastair Cook's opening partner, despite averaging under 30 in the County Championship this season.

"There has been a lot of speculation over the last couple of weeks, ever since a certain Mr Strauss decided to retire," Carberry told ESPN. "I'm flattered that my name has come back around for that opening spot.

"I've played pretty well in the last few years and I've kept my performances to a high standard, so I'm glad I'm back in the melting pot.

"England will probably be looking at all options. I'm two years older and probably at that stage where people will ask: do you take a 32-year-old? Hopefully they will, based on experience."

The 31-year-old's only Test appearance came against Bangladesh in 2010.
