John Lane targeting personal best in decathlon

England decathlete John Lane insists that he would be happy with just a personal best in the event tomorrow despite sitting in second place at the halfway stage.

Team England's John Lane has insisted that he will be content with a personal best at the Commonwealth Games despite reaching the halfway stage of the decathlon in second place.

As things stand, Lane is in line for a silver medal in Glasgow having recorded three personal bests and impressed in all five disciplines at Hampden Park today.

The 25-year-old is confident that he still has some of his strongest events to come, but is not getting too hung up on the idea of finishing on the podium tomorrow evening.

"Gold would be amazing, but you've got the likes of Damian [Warner] here whose rattling out unbelievable performances. I think a PB overall is what I'm going for, and if I get a medal it's all the better," Lane told Sports Mole.

"I've got some very strong events on day two. Pole vault is quite strong and hurdles - if I get it right - is quite strong. I just want to put them together and see what happens at the end."

Lane received huge support inside a packed Hampden Park as the crowd got fully behind the home nations, and he was keen to pay tribute to the atmosphere created by the fans.

"It's ridiculous. It's unbelievable. I didn't think it'd be that loud, but it's deafening," he added.

The decathlon will conclude tomorrow, with the athletes taking part in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m.
