John Lane: 'I couldn't be happier with performance on day one'

England's John Lane says that he "couldn't be happier" with his performances on the opening day of the decathlon having reached the halfway stage in second place.

Team England's John Lane has said that he "couldn't be happier" with his performance on the first day of the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games.

Lane performed consistently throughout the day, reaching the halfway stage in second place going into tomorrow's final five disciplines.

The 25-year-old was delighted with his display having recorded personal bests in the 100m, long jump and shot put, while he also finished second in the high jump and third in the 400m.

"If you told me I would be second after day one this time last year I would not have believed you. I have had three personal bests, a good high jump and a good 400m, so I couldn't be happier to be honest," Lane told Sports Mole.

"The hardest part of decathlon is putting 10 solid marks on the board. I've done five, now I've got five left to go. At the minute, I'm not [feeling] great [about the remaining events].

"But I'll go back, have an ice bath, get some food, get a massage and hopefully tomorrow morning when I'm up at 6am, I'll be up for hurdles."

Lane's compatriot Ashley Bryant is also in the hunt for medals having finished the first day in fourth.
