Miami Dolphins vice-president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum has revealed that he had no concerns over handing quarterback Ryan Tannehill a lucrative contract.
The Dolphins secured the future of the 26-year-old until 2020 by giving him a six-year deal worth $96m (£61.3m), with $45m (£28.7m) guaranteed.
Tannenbaum has insisted that he had no qualms about handing Tannehill the deal, despite Mark Sanchez's decline after he received a huge contract when Tannenbaum was general manger of the New York Jets.
"The easy decision would have been to say, well, I extended a quarterback early in his career, so let's not do that here. But I think that would have been selfish of me, more so than what's the best decision for the Dolphins," Tannenbaum told TheMMQB.com.
"We felt like this was a very reasonable bet to take. When you are doing an extension, it's not about comparing Ryan to Sanchez, it's much more about aspirationally, what do we want our program to truly be about?"
Tannehill has thrown for 11,252 yards along with 63 touchdowns to 42 interceptions in his three years in the NFL.
