Kansas City Chiefs fans have broken the world record for the noisiest outdoor sports stadium, reaching 137.5 decibels during the closing minutes of their 24-7 win over the Oakland Raiders yesterday.
Fans at the Arrowhead Stadium broke the previous record of 136.6 that was set by the Seattle Seahawks supporters during a match against the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year.
The noise generated by the Chiefs fans was just 2.5 decibels less than that of a jet engine at 100 feet, and chairman Clark Hunt believes that it is "very difficult" for opposition teams to play in such an atmosphere.
"I had people who'd been coming to Chiefs games for decades come up to me and say, 'I've never heard it that loud'. It's very difficult for a team to play in that," The AP quotes Hunt as saying.
The Chiefs' victory ensured that they remain unbeaten this season, although they still share top spot in the AFC West with the league's only other 6-0 side, the Denver Broncos.
