Kei Nishikori overcame the challenge of Tim Smyczek during their round two match at the US Open this afternoon.
The first two sets proved to be relatively straightforward for Japan's Nishikori, who dropped just four games on his way to recording 6-2 successes.
Smyczek, playing in front of a home crowd, provided more resistance during the third set as he managed to hold four of his service games.
However, Nishikori was still able to claim a break of serve, which in turn allowed him to go on and take the set 6-4.
He will now face either Marin Cilic or Daniel Brands in round three.
