Jockey Richard Hughes has given up his riding licence in protest over new whipping rules.

Hughes was given his second ban in four days at Kempton after he was found guilty of overuse of the whip on More Than Words.

The new rules restrict jockeys to using the whip seven times during a flat race and eight times over a jump race.

Riders are also banned from whipping their horse more than five times during the final furlong.

"I'd rather retire," said Hughes. "I can't ride horses like this, it's like telling Lionel Messi that he can't use his left foot."

The 38-year-old said that he would give up his licence until the new rules were reviewed.
