Fernando Alonso sets pace in Monaco first practice session

Fernando Alonso records the quickest time in the Monaco Grand Prix first practice session, while Heikki Kovalainen is forced to retire after engine failure.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has begun preparations for this Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix on the front foot by claiming the fastest time in the first practice on the Monte Carlo track.

Romain Grosjean clocked the second quickest pace for Lotus Renault, while Sauber's Sergio Perez clinched the third spot in the table after completing the infamous circuit.

McLaren teammates Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button came in at fourth and eighth respectively, with Nico Rosberg recording the 10th quickest time for Mercedes.

The first practice was not completed without complications though, as Caterham Renault's Heikki Kovalainen suffered what was believed to be engine failure after plumes of smoke filled the tunnel, which forced the 30-year-old to pull up and retire.

The second practice on the track is due to begin at 1pm UK time.
