Valencia thrash Real Zaragoza to reach Copa del Rey last 16

Valencia reach the last 16 of the Copa del Rey following a routine 4-1 home win over Real Zaragoza at the Mestalla on Thursday night for a 6-1 aggregate victory.

Valencia have cruised into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey following a routine 4-1 home win over Real Zaragoza on Thursday night for a 6-1 aggregate victory.

Natxo Gonzalez's charges travelled to the Mestalla on Thursday having lost the first leg 2-0 and sitting 14th in the Spanish second division with just one win in their past eight games.

Valencia, meanwhile, had not lost a single game this season and although they were nearly caught out by a fourth-minute Vinicius Araujo effort, took the lead just before the half-hour mark.

Simone Zaza played the ball into the path of Santi Mina, who rifled beyond the reach of goalkeeper Alvaro Raton from the centre of the box into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Marcelino's side continued to press forward but were unable to add to their tally by the break, having to wait until just before the hour when Mina drilled home his second of the game.

Zaragoza struggled to contain a dominant Valencia team and went on to concede another two goals as Robert Ibanez and Ruben Vezo put the outcome of the tie beyond all doubt.

However, the visitors did manage to claim a consolation goal late on when Javi Ros's cross was headed home by Jorge Pombo.

Valencia (4-2-2-2): Domenech; Vidal, Vezo, Gabriel, Lato; Maksimovic, Parejo (Soler 62'); Gil (Torres 70'), Pereira (Ibanez 62'); Mina, Zaza

Real Zaragoza (4-2-3-1): Raton; Vicente (Delmas 69'), Valentin, Grippo (Zalaya 74'), Lasure; Guti, Ros; Pombo, Buff, Oyarzun; Vinicius (Rai 60')
