Stevenage secure promotion to League One for the 2023-24 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Grimsby Town, while Hartlepool United are relegated to the National League.

Stevenage have secured promotion to League One for the 2023-24 campaign thanks to a 2-0 victory over Grimsby Town on Saturday afternoon.

The Boro entered the match knowing that a victory would guarantee their promotion to the third tier of English football with one game to spare.

Jamie Reid made the breakthrough in the 57th minute of the contest, before Luther Wildin doubled the home side's advantage 10 minutes later in Hertfordshire.

Grimsby were unable to respond, with the victory moving Stevenage onto 82 points in the table, leaving them four clear of fourth-placed Stockport County with just one game to play.

Steve Evans's side are not yet guaranteed second spot in the table behind champions Leyton Orient, though, as Northampton Town are only two points behind.

Northampton would also have been promoted with a victory, but Town suffered a 2-1 home loss to Bradford City, taking their fight for automatic promotion to the final set of fixtures.

Stevenage, who finished 21st in League Two last season, have been present in the fourth tier of English football since being relegated from League One in 2013-14.

As a result, next season will be their first campaign in the third tier for 10 years.

Stevenage have won four of their last five league games during a strong run of form, and they will end their campaign away to ninth-placed Barrow on May 8.

Hartlepool, meanwhile, have been relegated to the National League despite recording a 3-1 victory over Barrow on Saturday afternoon.

Pools needed Crawley Town to lose to stand a chance of staying in the league, but the Red Devils picked up a point in a goalless draw with Walsall.

John Askey's side are therefore on 42 points, four points behind 22nd-placed Crawley with one game left, with Hartlepool relegated to the National League after only two seasons back in the Football League.
