Man United 'make decision' on £54.1m midfielder transfer after 'unlucky' season

Manchester United reportedly have no intention of parting ways with Mason Mount this summer following his difficult debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have reportedly decided whether they are willing to sell Mason Mount this summer following his troubled first season at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea star was a £54.1m purchase from the Blues in the summer of 2023, joining as one of three marquee arrivals alongside Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana.

However, while the latter two cemented their spots in Erik ten Hag's lineup during the 2023-24 campaign, Mount was cruelly struck down by injuries and played just 20 games for the Red Devils.

The England international only managed one goal and one assist in the process, and his struggles unsurprisingly led to him missing out on a place in the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024.

The 25-year-old did at least end the campaign with an FA Cup winners' medal around his neck, and his contract at the Theatre of Dreams runs for another four seasons, with the option of a further 12 months.

Man United 'will not sell Mount' amid transfer rumours

However, it has been suggested that the Red Devils could cut their losses on Mount this summer, as Erik ten Hag seeks to raise funds for a handful of new arrivals, including midfield and attacking reinforcements.

According to Fabrizio Romano, though, Man United have no plans to let the former Chelsea man leave the club in the current window, and the player himself is also keen to prove himself under Ten Hag next season.

Mount was restricted to just five Premier League starts and one in the Champions League in 2023-24, but he has already been named in the first XI twice in pre-season.

The 25-year-old completed 45 minutes of the Red Devils' 1-0 loss to Rosenborg and held his spot in the starting lineup for Saturday's clash with Rangers, where he set up Amad Diallo's first-half opener.

Mount could have a significant role to play for Ten Hag next season should he avoid the same injury fate as he did in his debut term, especially as his versatility allows him to function out wide, as a number 10 or in a deeper midfield role.

Which midfielders could Man United buy and sell this summer?

While Mount will be given another chance to prove his worth to Ten Hag, other midfielders are seemingly on the cusp of leaving the club this summer, following Donny van de Beek and Shola Shoretire out of the door.

Brazilian veteran Casemiro is expected to be one of them, and there is still uncertainty over the long-term future of Scott McTominay, whom Man United have supposedly turned down a bid from Fulham for.

Christian Eriksen and Hannibal Mejbri could also depart if the right offer is tabled, and a wave of exits would make room for a couple of arrivals, namely Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte.

The Red Devils have supposedly agreed personal terms with the Uruguay international and are making progress on the club side too, while they have also been tipped to reignite their interest in Adrien Rabiot.

Ten Hag tried and failed to bring him to Old Trafford in 2022, but the Frenchman is now a free agent after running down his contract with Juventus.
