Bryan Robson urges Manchester United to keep hold of coaching staff

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson urges the club to keep hold of Ryan Giggs and his coaching staff even if they do appoint Louis van Gaal as manager.

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has urged the club to keep hold of the likes of Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes this summer.

Giggs was installed as United's interim manager for the final four games of the campaign after David Moyes was sacked following a poor first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Welsh winger has been assisted by a number of his former teammates in the job, and Robson believes that they should all be kept on in some role if the speculation regarding Louis van Gaal's imminent appointment is true.

"I think it would be very disappointing for those lads not to be kept on, in whatever role, as they are part of Manchester United. The fans would be very disappointed if they don't have a future in the club," Robson is quoted as saying by PA.

"I have read that Van Gaal wants to bring in a goalkeeper coach, a fitness coach, and [Patrick] Kluivert as his assistant. If you are talking about bringing all these people in you have to make sure that you are making the right decision and you are not allowing them too much rope.

"It is up to the board to step in and say, 'You can have leeway with this, but there are definitely restrictions on this part of the club'. That has to come from the club rather than the new coach. Sometimes I think when you go into a new club, why not give the staff a chance?"

United's 1-0 defeat to struggling Sunderland on Saturday was their seventh home loss of the season.
