Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan believes that manager Pep Guardiola has made an encouraging start to his time in charge of the club.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has said that manager Pep Guardiola has made a "good start" to his time in charge of the team.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss won his opening 10 games across all competitions following his summer move to the Etihad, only to then suffer a six-match winless streak.

However, City have now won three and lost none of their last four - including a memorable Champions League triumph over Barcelona - and Gundogan is keen to take that form into Wednesday's Group C clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.

"I'm really happy to be back. It's a special feeling. My start at City was better than expected after my injury," Gundogan told reporters having missed Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

"The manager has a clear idea of what he wants. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it's a good start. Our aim is to repeat [the win over Barca]. If we want to win this competition, we have to compete with the best."

Victory for Man City against Monchengladbach on Wednesday will guarantee their place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
