Gary Lineker: England squad is "unproven but exciting"

Former England striker Gary Lineker gives his verdict on Roy Hodgson's 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Former England international Gary Lineker has described the 23-man squad for this summer's World Cup as "unproven but exciting".

Just six players have previous experience of the tournament, while the likes of Luke Shaw, Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling have just six senior international caps between them.

However, despite harbouring a concern over the defensive options, Lineker has expressed his happiness at Roy Hodgson's selection.

"England's squad: Bags of attacking talent, much unproven but exciting nevertheless, blatantly short defensively through the centre," he wrote on Twitter.

England will take on Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica during the group stages in Brazil.
