Peter Reid: 'England still have World Cup chance'

Former England player Peter Reid believes that his country has a chance of lifting this year's World Cup in Brazil, despite being handed a potentially tough group.

Former England player Peter Reid believes that his country still has a chance of lifting this year's World Cup, despite being handed a potentially tough group.

Roy Hodgson and his men will play their opening match in the challenging conditions found in Manaus, in a group that consists of Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

"Calling the past tournaments 'failures' is a bit harsh because I think sometimes people just expect England to go out there and win it and it's not as simple as that," said Reid, according to Football Direct News.

"You've got to get to the World Cup first and we've managed to do that but it's a tough group we're in. Hodgson will be just be focused on the group stage. Can we win the World Cup? It's going to be tough.

"No European team has managed to win the tournament in South America – but you never know."

England's first match will see them face Italy on 15 June.
