Charlton Athletic "extremely saddened" by supporter unrest

Charlton Athletic release a statement vowing to work closely with the club's fanbase after more protests were held before and during the 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Charlton Athletic have vowed to work closely with supporters to smooth out the relationship between the fanbase and the club's hierarchy.

The Addicks' 2-0 win over Middlesbrough on Sunday was overshadowed by a mock funeral prior to the match, used to highlight Athletic's recent plight.

Fans are disappointed by the way in which the club is currently being run by owner Roland Duchatelet and chief executive Katrien Meire.

Protests continued during the game at The Valley, as a number of inflatable balls were launched onto the pitch shortly after kickoff, while spectators also blew whistles throughout.

Charlton have now released a statement in an attempt to help improve the relationship, saying: "The club is extremely saddened by the situation which has led to supporters demonstrating ahead of, and during, the match against Middlesbrough on Sunday.

"Every supporter has the right to voice their opinion and we are determined to do everything we can to work together with supporters to build our relationship with them and make sure they remain at the heart of this club.

"We would like to thank supporters for getting behind the team today as we picked up a valuable three points in our fight to stay in the Championship."

Charlton are now five points from safety thanks to a run of seven points collected from the last nine on offer.
