The Seagulls are five points clear of the drop zone.

Chris Hughton has warned his Brighton side not to get "carried away" after they finally returned to the road towards securing another Premier League campaign.

The Seagulls head to rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday having delivered a first win in eight league games by beating bottom club Huddersfield.

However, with the gap to the relegation zone standing at only five points, Hughton knows there can be no complacency during the closing stages of the season.

"The fact is we have gone through a difficult spell, (but) overall we have done OK," the Brighton boss said.

"During difficult periods when you look at the opposition you are against, you have to be mindful of where we have been, and that this is only our second season (in the Premier League).

"Certainly we should not get carried away. Our form has not been as good as we would have liked of late, but I was delighted with last weekend."

Hughton continued at a press conference: "A club like ours in this division will always have tough periods.

"You have to work with the players on and off the field, but ultimately the further away you are from the bottom three, the better the feeling."

Brighton saw off the Eagles 3-1 at home during December, and Hughton knows it will be another fiery encounter at Selhurst Park in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off.

"They have some very good individuals and are in good form and we know we'll have to be at our best," Hughton said.

"It's a big one for both sets of supporters. It's one they don't want to lose – speaking of our fans, they've been excellent all year.

"Our supporters will make themselves heard, and it's up to us to reward them for that."

Hughton confirmed midfielder Pascal Gross would miss the trip to south London because of a hamstring injury, but he could return for the FA Cup quarter-final tie at Millwall on March 17.

"We will see how it goes this week, he is not back training but has been doing some good work with the medical department," the Brighton boss said.

"He has a chance for Millwall possibly, if not it will be after the international break."
