Son Heung-Min: 'I turned down Borussia Dortmund to join Bayer Leverkusen'

Son Heung-Min explains that he turned down Borussia Dortmund to join Bayer Leverkusen for first-team opportunities.

Son Heung-Min has revealed that he turned down Borussia Dortmund to join Bayer Leverkusen.

The 20-year-old striker completed his move to the BayArena from Hamburger SV on Thursday for a fee in the region of £8.5m.

Son has said that he rejected the advances of Champions League finalists Dortmund because he wants to play regular first-team football.

"I wanted to stay in the Bundesliga and Leverkusen and Dortmund wanted me," Goal.com quotes him as saying.

"Both teams play in the Champions League but I thought Dortmund would use rotation more than Leverkusen. That's why I chose Leverkusen over Dortmund. It's really important to play regularly at my age.

"Any player would want to play in the big games in the Champions League. I know there will still be plenty of competition at Leverkusen and I will prepare for the season well and try to put in good performances when it begins."

The South Korean international scored 23 goals in 70 appearances for Hamburg.
