England are dealt a blow with the news that Ollie Pope has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes with a shoulder injury.

England have been dealt a blow ahead of the third Ashes Test after Ollie Pope was ruled out of the remainder of the series with a shoulder injury.

On Sunday, England went 2-0 down in the best-of-five series as they suffered a 43-run defeat at Lord's, albeit in controversial circumstances.

Ben Stokes and his side only have days to regroup ahead of the third instalment, which begins at Headingley on Thursday, and they will have to make do without one of their senior batsman.

Pope, who is vice-captain to Stokes, sustained an issue with his shoulder during Australia's first innings, resulting in time off the pitch.

The 25-year-old was still able to take to the crease with the bat, scoring 42 and three respectively, but it was clear that his place in the side was very much in doubt.

Even if the short turnaround would keep him out of the third Test, there had been hope that Pope would be able to shake off the issue in order to return for Tests four and five.

However, the ECB revealed on Tuesday morning that Pope's shoulder, which was dislocated, will require surgery and he will be sidelined for the remainder of the summer.

With it being announced that England will not bring a fresh face into the squad, Dan Lawrence is expected to take Pope's place in the lineup for the upcoming fixture.

Lawrence has 11 Test appearances to his name, scoring 551 runs at an average of 29, but he recently scored 152 in his last County Championship appearance for Essex against Warwickshire.
