Georgia: 'President won't attend Winter Games in Sochi'

Georgia denies that President Georgy Margvelashvili would be travelling to Sochi for the Winter Olympics, according to a government press release.

Georgia has denied that President Georgy Margvelashvili will be travelling to Sochi for the Winter Olympics.

A Russian government official suggested earlier today that the Georgian premier could meet up with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the Games, in what would be the neighbours' first top-level diplomatic encounter since a conflict between the two nations in 2008.

However, Tbilisi has refuted such claims.

"The Georgian official delegation will not attend the Olympic Games in Sochi," Vano Machavariani, the Georgian president's foreign policy adviser, told Reuters.

"Georgia will be represented in Sochi by our sportsmen and representatives of the Georgian Olympic Committee."

The Caucasus nation fought a five-day war with Russia in 2008 under its former President Mikheil Saakashvili, over the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
