Stanislas Wawrinka survives Donald Young scare

Despite performing below his best in New York, Wawrinka had come through his first three matches without dropping a set, but he impressed during the opener against Young, dropping just one point behind his first serve while breaking the American in the third game of the set.

However, the 10-set winning streak came to an end in the second as Young took aim on the Swiss's second delivery to break twice and level the match with less than an hour on the clock.

It did not take the French Open champion long to rediscover his form in the third set, breaking the American early on to quickly open up a 5-2 lead, although Young held serve to force the fifth seed to serve it out.

A strong return game from Wawrinka at the start of the fourth immediately handed him a break, forcing Young to take increased risks to try to get back into the set, but the two-time Grand Slam champion rarely looked troubled on his serve in the remainder of the set, seeing him through to the quarter-finals.

Wawrinka will play the winner of the match between Andy Murray and Kevin Anderson in the last eight.
