Gael Monfils overcomes Grigor Dimitrov to secure quarter-finals spot

Grigor Dimitrov crashes out of the US Open at the fourth-round stage having lost 7-5 7-6 7-5 against Gael Monfils.

Gael Monfils has booked his place in the quarter-finals of the US Open courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Grigor Dimitrov.

The Frenchman overcame his seventh seed opponent 7-5 7-6 7-5 at Flushing Meadows in a time of two hours and 26 minutes.

The first set went the way of serve until the 11th game when Dimitrov lost out, allowing Monfils to edge ahead in what was a tightly-fought opener in New York.

A tie-break was needed in the second set to separate the pair, and after seeing Dimitrov blow two set points, the world number 24 took his opportunity to take command of the match.

Having won a break of serve in the 12th game of the third set, Monfils managed to wrap up the contest to secure a spot in the last eight of the showpiece event.

Roberto Bautista Agut or Roger Federer await in the quarters, with the duo set to face off later tonight.
