Angelique Kerber ousted by Swiss teen Belinda Bencic

Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic is through to the fourth round of the US Open after beating sixth seed Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

Seventeen-year-old Belinda Bencic has knocked out sixth seed Angelique Kerber to secure a place in the fourth round at the US Open this evening, beating her 6-1 7-5.

The German had a chance to edge ahead early on when she brought up a couple of break points, but the Swiss player dug deep to hold before breaking her opponent.

Bencic continued to cause problems for the sixth seed, allowing her to clinch just a single game in a 34-minute first set.

Kerber looked to have found her form at the start of the second as she tried to get back into the match, breaking Bencic's serve at the start.

However, she was unable to convert a chance for a double break, allowing the Swiss to capitalise on an opportunity in the next game to level, before a string of errors from Kerber allowed the teen to clinch the match.

Bencic will face former world number one Jelena Jankovic in the next round.
