Serena Williams has progressed through to the last 16 of the Rogers Cup after fighting back to beat Flavia Pennetta.
The world number one looked on course for an early exit after dropping the first set, but she soon stormed back to record a 2-6 6-3 6-0 win.
Before the match, Pennetta had lost all her previous meetings with Williams and had not won a set since 2008, but she produced a stunning start to the contest by breaking four times in the opener.
Williams did not look herself, but she soon found her range to drop just seven points behind her serve during the second to set up a decider.
Pennetta, the world number 26, would have hoped to remain competitive but she was blown away by her American opponent, who registered six successive games to run out a convincing winner.
