Kei Nishikori grabs a place in the second round of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets win over Jurgen Melzer.

Kei Nishikori has progressed into the second round of the Madrid Open with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Jurgen Melzer.

The number 14 seed was able to get the better of Melzer in the first round by clinching the first break of serve to give him the edge in the opening exchanges.

The Japanese pro took control of the court by issuing well-executed forehands and quick returns, which Melzer struggled to deal with, to take a one-set lead.

Another early break ensured that Nishikori remained on top in the second set, and while Melzer tried to secure a break of his own, he failed to do enough to trouble his opponent.
