David Ferrer overcomes Marinko Matosevic to advance into Mexican Open quarter-finals

David Ferrer advances into the quarter-final stage of the Mexican Open courtesy of a 7-6(3) 6-4 victory over Marinko Matosevic in Acapulco.

Second seed David Ferrer was made to work hard to battle past Marinko Matosevic in straight sets and advance into the last eight of the Mexican Open this morning.

The Spaniard needed one hour and 43 minutes to book a meeting with Bernard Tomic, coming out on top 7-6(3) 6-4 in Acapulco.

Both players were undone by a number of unforced errors throughout the contest - 31 for Ferrer and 42 for world number 80 Matosevic.

It was Ferrer who managed to dig deep, however, saving four match points in the 10th game to take the opener to a tie-break, before pushing on to edge ahead.

The second set proved to be a little more straightforward as the 2013 French Open finalist used his experience to secure a place in the quarter-finals by breaking his opponent on two separate occasions.
