Greg Rusedski says that US Open champion Andy Murray has the potential to end 2012 as the world number one.

Former British number one Greg Rusedski has said that US Open champion Andy Murray has the potential to end 2012 at the top of the ATP rankings.

The 25-year-old is currently third in the world behind Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, having overtaken Rafael Nadal.

"It shows you what a champion he is and, having won [the US Open], he can go on to win many majors and maybe end the year as the world number one," Rusedski told Sky Sports News.

Murray beat Djokovic 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 in the final at Flushing Meadows yesterday to win the first Grand Slam title of his career.
