Novak Djokovic, Petra Kvitova win ITF awards

Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova win the International Tennis Federation's world champions award for the first time.

Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova have been named the International Tennis Federation's world champions for 2011.

World number one Djokovic has become the first male player other than Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal to win the award since 2003.

"I am proud to have been named the ITF world champion for 2011," said the Serbian. "Starting with victory in last year's Davis Cup Final, this has been an almost perfect 12 months for me.

"I have always dreamed about becoming the best in the world, and to have won three Grand Slam titles and finished the year as number one is very special."

Kvitova defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the final of Wimbledon, while also helping the Czech Republic to victory in the Fed Cup.

"I will cherish this award, which is the cherry on top of a wonderful year in which I managed to win Wimbledon, the WTA Championships, and together with the Czech team the Fed Cup," said the 21-year-old.

"It was a dream year and something I will never forget."

It is the first time that both players have been awarded the title.
