The 32-year-old Swiss got the better of his opponent 6-2 7-6(5) at Indian Wells, converting on three break point opportunities and firing nine aces in the process.
It is the seventh time that the world number eight has defeated the French qualifier since they first met 11 years ago and extended his 2014 record to 15 wins from 17 competitive matches.
Federer will take on Dmitry Tursunov in the third round.
