Andy Murray: 'Nick Kyrgios must learn to deal with expectation'

British number one Andy Murray says that he can relate to how Nick Kyrgios is feeling right now having experienced the expectation of a nation bearing down on him before.

Andy Murray has warned Australian teen sensation Nick Kyrgios that he must "learn how to deal" with the pressure of major tournaments.

The 19-year-old set up a quarter-final meeting with the British number one by fighting back from two sets down to beat Andreas Seppi in a marathon battle yesterday morning.

Having won a Grand Slam title on his own turf at Wimbledon, Murray knows all about what it feels like to have the hopes of a nation weighing down on your shoulders.

Speaking ahead of his last-eight contest against Kyrgios, he told The Age: "I can understand how Nick is feeling today as he waits for the match to begin.

"He said a few days ago that he thinks he can win this tournament and if you say that you're going to win the event, you have to expect the pressure. I've been through that for 10 years of my career at Wimbledon – it's something you have to learn how to deal with.

"Everyone deals with the situation differently: some people love the attention and like reading the newspapers and seeing what people are saying. I prefer to try to stay away from it all and try to conserve my energy for the match."

Fan-favourite Kyrgios is the first male Australian player to reach this stage of the tournament since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005.
