At 42, Kimiko Date-Krumm becomes the oldest woman to win a singles match at the Australian Open.

Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm has become the oldest women to win a match at the Australian Open with her victory over Nadia Petrova earlier today.

Date-Krumm belied her 42 years to breeze past 12th seed Petrova in straight sets on day two in Melbourne Park and claim the record in the process.

After spending 10 years away from the tour, Date-Krumm returned to professional tennis in 2008 and has insisted that there is no magic trick to her longevity.

She told reporters: "I sleep a lot. I eat healthy foods. I drink a lot and bedtime is usually before 10. It's a simple life, that's it. Nothing special.

"After I stopped playing tennis in 1996, I never thought I would come back on the tour. But I love sports. I love tennis.

"I'm very happy to win today, but I don't play for the records, I'm playing for fun."

Date-Krumm had her best run at Melborune Park nearly 18 years ago, reaching the semi-final stage in 1994.
