Eugenie Bouchard has said that she was happy to "stay solid" in her first-round match at the Australian Open this morning.
The seventh seed eased past Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam in straight sets to set up a second round meeting with Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.
The 20-year-old told reporters: "The first match of a Grand Slam is never easy, I'm happy to get through. I'm so happy to be back in Melbourne. The support here is crazy.
"I was happy to start strong. Conditions were tough, it was a bit windy and she's a good player. I was happy to stay solid, but there are still a lot of things to improve."
Bouchard reached the semi-finals in Melbourne last year.
