British number three Jack Draper suffered a swift exit from the Adelaide International 1 to Karen Khachanov in the second round.
The 21-year-old strolled to a two-set win over Kwon Soon-woo in his opening match of the 2023 season but went down 4-6 2-6 to Khachanov in one hour and 31 minutes.
Khachanov brought up three break points in the seventh game of the first set, but Draper managed to recover with a pair of aces to bring it back to 40-40 before ultimately being broken.
The Russian went 40-15 up on the Draper serve in the ninth game, and while he failed to convert either match point, he held convincingly to gain the upper hand.
Draper posted six aces in the first set, but it was Khachanov's turn to rack up the numbers in the second, hitting five compared to the Brit's zero as he dominated proceedings early on.
The Russian broke to love in the first game of the second set and never looked in any real danger of ceding his advantage, breaking once more in game seven to advance to the quarter-finals.
Khachanov faces an eye-catching battle with compatriot and third seed Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0 6-3, in the last eight.
