Team GB's Charlie Maddock "overwhelmed" by gold medal triumph

Great Britain's Charlie Maddock reveals that she is "overwhelmed" by her success in clinching a gold medal in the women's -49kg taekwondo final at the European Games.

Charlie Maddock has admitted that she is "overwhelmed" by her gold medal win for Great Britain in the women's -49kg taekwondo final at the European Games.

The 19-year-old took an 8-5 lead in the second round against Serbia's Tijana Bogdanovic, but her opponent rallied to take the encounter into a golden point.

Maddock held her composure to throw the winning punch and secure the gold medal at the Crystal Hall.

She told Team GB's official website: "I just feel overwhelmed. I put so much hard work into getting into the semis but to win the final is just the icing on the cake. I stuck to my game plan after going behind, which is all I could do and had to keep fighting.

"Usually I have to attack first and get the points. If I sit back I tend to concede so I may as well keep pushing but that didn't seem to work in the final and we kept clashing so I thought I may as well just punch to try and get that final point.

"I'm going to come up against the best but I'll take on whoever – you have to fight them anyway - and I'm happy to take them on."

Maddock's triumph was Team GB's second gold medal win of the Games.
