Hull FC will have to make do without the services of Joe Westerman for the next three months.
The number 13 suffered a dislocated shoulder as he went over for a try during Sunday's victory over the London Broncos.
Coach Peter Gentle has conceded that Westerman's absence could have an impact on his side.
"We are tremendously disappointed for Joe, as he was really starting to show signs of what we are looking for from him," Gentle told the club's official website.
"He is a talented player and no doubt a loss to our side, however, getting him fit and healthy for the rest of the season is now our main priority.
"He has received superb care from our medical staff and the specialists and we'll get him back playing as soon as we can."
Westerman will undergo surgery on Friday afternoon.
