Sports presenter Charlie Webster 'seriously ill' after contracting malaria

Charlie Webster, a former Sky Sports News and ITV Sport presenter, is in an induced coma after contracting a rare strain of malaria while cycling to Rio.

Sports presenter Charlie Webster is in an induced coma after contracting a rare strain of Malaria while travelling to the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The 33-year-old, who has previously worked for Sky Sports News and ITV Sport, picked up the infection following a 3,000-mile charity cycle to the Brazilian city.

Webster's condition has deteriorated since being admitted to hospital on August 6 - two days after arriving in Rio de Janeiro - and she is now understood to be seriously ill.

The Telegraph quotes a source close to the presenter as saying: "There are real concerns for her, it is a serious condition. We are so worried for her but at the same time she is very fit so we are praying she will pull through."

Webster's mother, brother and manager have flown from the UK to be at her bedside.
